Reading Vivian Maier

Describe it:
The image is split in half, a sidewalk on the right and the street on the left. To the right of the sidewalk are houses and to the left of the street are office buildings. On the street, up against the sidewalk, is a large, black car with a "No Parking" sign next to it. In front of the car are three African-American boys playing with planks of wood torn off of a box. Two of of the boys are sitting on the sidewalk curb while the other is sitting on the street next to the curb. One of the boys sitting on the sidewalk is shirtless while the other is wearing suspenders. The boy sitting on the street is wearing shorts and a baggy t-shirt.

Relate it:
1. What does this photograph remind you of?
This photograph reminds me of the poverty that many African-American families had to deal with and the segregation that caused it.

2. What interests you most about his work of art?
I find it interesting that children are playing with planks of wood in the street. I would find that activity to be a little dangerous for them, especially since they are in the street.

Analyze it:
1. What is closer to you? Further away?
The boys playing with the planks and the car behind them are in the foreground. In the background, you can see a man resting his leg on a railing and a long line of buildings.

2. What can you tell me about the person in this photograph?
The children in this photograph most likely lived in poverty. The way they are dressed suggests they don't have much money to buy clothing for them whenever they wear through it.

Interpret it:
1. What do you think is happening in this photograph? What else could be happening?
It looks as though the three boys are playing destroying a box by ripping the boards off of it, using it as their "toy" per se. They could also have just found a box while walking around and decided to break it apart.

2. What sounds would this photograph make (if it could)?
There would probably be sounds of men and women bustling about, sounds of the children breaking pieces of wood, maybe laughing.

Evaluate it:
1. What do you think is good about his photograph? What is not so good?
I like how the curb leads to the boys but also continues to draw the eye to the car and the sign pole. The pole brings the eye up to the part of the sign that says "no parking."

2. Do you think the person who made this photograph did a good or bad job? What makes you think so?
I think they did a good job with this photograph because they use some good leading lines and she filled the photograph so there is very little "empty space."

Describe it:
The entrance to a grocery store. Two well-dressed men are walking out of the exit while a Pit Bull is sitting in front of the entrance, looking at the men. Between the doors is a railing

Relate it:
1. What does this photograph remind you of?
This makes me think about obedience.

2. What interests you most about his work of art?
The dog sitting in front of the entrance piques my interest.

Analyze it:
1. What is closer to you? Further away?
In the foreground is a dog, the entrance/exit, the two men exiting the store, and the railing between the dog and men. In the background is the rest of the store. It looks as though there is a shopper or sales clerk as well, along with other store items (clothing, food, etc.).

2. What can you tell me about the person in this photograph?
The two men are probably wondering why there is a dog standing in the entrance of a store.

Interpret it:
1. What do you think is happening in this photograph? What else could be happening?
The dog is probably waiting for its owner to come back out of the store and two men happen to walk out and spot the dog. The dog could also be a stray and is waiting for someone to give it food.

2. What sounds would this photograph make (if it could)?
The bustling of the city in the part of the photograph we can't see. The man in the back is probably laughing.

Evaluate it:
1. What do you think is good about his photograph? What is not so good?

2. Do you think the person who made this photograph did a good or bad job? What makes you think so?
